What is the Difference Between Companion and Medical Care?

When it comes to the care for your elderly loved ones, it is important to know the difference between the services offered. Medical caregivers and companion caregivers do not fulfill the same duties. Medical caregivers usually consist of certified nursing assistants and other certified medical personnel. Companion caretakers do not need the same education and do not offer the same services. To help you better understand what each caregiver does, we explain it.

Companion Caregivers

Companion caregivers are individuals who assist elders with non-medical tasks. They offer the support and comfort the seniors usually need. Companions are especially helpful if you cannot dedicate the proper time the senior in your life needs.

Companion duties include:

  • Running errands
  • Preparing meals
  • Lightly cleaning around the house
  • Doing laundry and ironing
  • Watering plants
  • Joining in recreational activities such as reading, games, conversation

Medical Caregiver

Medical caregivers usually consist of certified nursing assistants or medical assistants. These individuals have the medical training needed to help with things like injections and properly reading vital signs.

Some duties of medical caregivers include:

  • Recording behavior and health patterns
  • Changing dressings, bandages, and slings
  • Reading and monitoring vital signs
  • Administering medication
  • Helping with treatments such as catheterization, douches, enemas, and irrigation
