The physical action of laughter can alleviate pain

On July 20th, the Laughter Guru brought some happiness to clients of the Visiting Nurse Association at the Friendship House Adult Day Care.

As people age, they find that their physical and mental faculties decrease. Even the ability to laugh decreases for seniors because the capacity to understand humor becomes more difficult with the onset of senile dementia, Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

Laughter Yoga is an ideal exercise for seniors in these circumstances, because it does not require any pre-established sense of humor or mental capabilities. Participants are able to comprehend humor without using their mental faculties. Just the physical action alone of a good hearty laugh gets rid of stress, worry and depression, and alleviates feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Laughter brings several positive changes. It reduces the risk factors for cardiac diseases, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and alleviates aches and pains caused by different types of arthritis. Due to lack of proper breathing, some seniors don’t get as much oxygen as they need. This is often the root cause of many ailments. Scientific studies have proven that laughter exercises and yogic breathing are great ways to increase the net supply of oxygen to the body’s cells to maintain good health and well-being.
