Although spontaneous laughter is not an uncommon occurrence at Friendship House, the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern N.J. (VNA) adult day care center, it’s now also a regularly scheduled monthly event.

When Pradep Nair, a “happiness-laughter consultant,” first approached the center’s manager, Mayelin Ravelo, about providing Laughter Yoga, she was unfamiliar with the concept but willing to give it a try.

Now, Nair (who also operates HomeWell Senior Care in Parsippany) is a welcome visitor at Friendship House, which offers therapeutic activities and social interaction for seniors who require supervision due to physical or cognitive limitations.

“The Laughter Yoga sessions are brief and the exercises seem silly at first, but they work,” explained Ravelo. “They put everyone in a cheerful mood. We’ve discovered that laughter is contagious. Every client and staff member inevitably joins in.”

Laughter Yoga is an international trend being embraced by people of all ages. At Friendship House, it’s also just one of a diverse slate of fun activities that includes arts and crafts, gardening, games and seasonal theme parties. In fact, Friendship House, at 130 Powerville Rd. in Boonton Twp., is a safe haven where seniors and adults with early onset Alzheimer’s disease and certain other condition scan find acceptance, companionship and individualized attention while loved ones who serve as their primary caregivers enjoy respite time or pursue other essential day-to-day tasks.

Friendship House is operated by VNA, a leading nonprofit provider of senior and caregiver services, and assistance with program fees is available to those who meet eligibility requirements for various grants.
