Researchers explore the connection between laughter therapy and bodily health

Morristown, NJ–Residents and seniors at Morris Hills get their morning started with a Laughter Yoga/Laughter Therapy class led by Laughter Guru Pradep Nair of HomeWell Senior Care.

Participants in the session benefited from what is referred to by researchers as psychoneuroimmunology, which explores the connection between the nervous system (the seat of thought, memory and emotions), the endocrine system (which secretes powerful hormones), and the immune system (which defends the body from microbial invasions). Laughter has been shown to be a significant force in battling existing maladies of each of those biological systems.

While research to prove the positive health benefits of humor and laughter is ongoing, it is beneficial to begin practicing laughter therapy in daily life. There’s no need to wait for more evidence; deep down we know that laughter and humor are good for our health. As a medicine it is safe, inexpensive, and does not require a doctor’s prescription. Just get into the habit of laughing by reading a comic, watching a funny movie or show, or for no reason at all. Laugh wholeheartedly. Share your laughter with others and spread the healthy, positive emotions that go with it. It is contagious and helps to open up communication with others.
